Cuba’s Digital Revolution: Between Quiescence and Revolt

October 24, 2025 @ 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm

Times are shown in Eastern Time

Weiser Hall 555

Abstract

A digital revolution is reshaping Cuba. Despite restrictions on free speech and assembly, a new generation is using social media to debate, inform, and challenge the authoritarian status quo. From animal rights campaigns to the mass July 2021 protests, these movements have been organized and documented through independent digital platforms. Young people, intellectuals, and artists are building unique online spaces for national dialogues and a more inclusive Cuba. Join us for a dialogue with Dr. Michaelanne Thomas at UMSI and Harold Cárdenas Lema, co-founder and former director of one of the foremost digital spaces for Cubans by Cubans on the island, La Joebn Cuba.

This event is co-sponsored by the LSA Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies, Donia Human Rights Center, and the Center for Emerging Democracies.
